The bells at the iconic abbey chimed at 1pm to mark the occasion, as they do for the birthdays of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the couple's children, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children.

Flags on Government buildings are usually changed to the Union Jack on these occasions, but were now not required for the prince after he stepped back from public life over the furore surrounding his friendship with convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

"Following the decision by the Duke of York to step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, there is no longer a requirement for UK government buildings to fly the Union flag on Wednesday February 19," the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said in a statement. The Royal family wished the Duke of York a happy birthday with a tweet featuring a photo of Prince Andrew as a baby accompanied by a contemporary photo of him, but it was met with a mix of well-wishes and negative replies.

"On this day in 1960, Prince Andrew was born at Buckingham Palace, the first child born to a reigning monarch for 103 years," it read.
