Rescuers have freed a whale calf from shark nets off Currumbin just a month after another mammal was caught at the same beach.
The alarm was raised when the young mammal was spotted trapped by people exercising on the beach at Currumbin at around dawn.Footage taken by the rescuers showed the net caught on some barnacles on the whale’s mouth as it floundered trying to free itself in between breaches.
Once it was cut free the whale momentarily relaxed before breaching and slowly swimming off underneath the rescuers’ boat.A witness said they had seen whales get caught in a similar spot before with the nets positioned in the path of their migration route.
