Health authorities have expanded access to oral antiviral treatments for coronavirus in Australia. Here’s what you need to know
Health authorities have expanded access to oral antiviral treatments for Covid-19 to millions of Australians. As of Monday, all Australians over 70 with Covid are now eligible for two antivirals –Lagevrio and Paxlovid – on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, as are a greater number of people at risk of severe disease.
Paxlovid is a combination of two drugs, nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, while Lagevrio is the brand name for the antiviral molnupiravir. “People can get antivirals after speaking to a doctor, but they need to act fast,” said the health minister, Mark Butler, in a statement. “Speak to your GP and make a plan for what you will do if you get Covid, so you can start taking antivirals as soon as possible after your positive result.”
“Timing is really one of the big things here,” Griffin said. “You need to get it within five days, but the first three days is better.”
