While a photographers' delight, the whirling dervish of weather proved devastating for those with land in its path."It spreads out ahead of the thunderstorms," meteorologist Belinda House said.According to the bureau, it's officially an elongated wedge-shaped cloud that attaches to the leading edge of a super cell."The humid air mass which is producing this really unstable weather enables the clouds to go really tall into the atmosphere," Ms House explained.
The shelf clouds were accompanied by blasts of lightning and hailstones, some of which measured 5 centimetres in diameter.
