The Aussie cartoon ‘Bluey’ launched in Australia in 2018 - and then proceeded to conquer the world.

The lessons Bluey can teach greedy developers and politicians about resurrecting the true Australian dream

Recently the magisterial American Merriam-Webster Dictionary listed “Bluey” as a “word worth knowing”.It can mean a “blue heeler” cattle dog, or a swag , or a blue-tongue lizard, or a blue bottle washed up on the beach or a bunch of other things. And it’s happening all because of a cartoon family created by writer and animator Joe Brumm.

They live in an old-fashioned “Queenslander” house. And each episode is built around the highly imaginative games Mum and Dad play with the kids. Governments declaring war on the family friendly Australian dream should draw inspiration from the backyard antics of 'Bluey' to design better housing and workplace policies, writes Kel Richards. One of his colleagues said that ‘Bluey’ is based on Joe’s own home life. If that’s so, his kids are really lucky and life must be a tonne of fun. It’s Mum and Dad being at home, spending time engaging imaginatively with their kids - and the kids learning and growing by playing.Parties compete with each other to offer bigger and better childcare subsidies.
