It's no surprise to me when I hear statistics about the number of cadetship programs or diversity projects that don't deliver lasting results, only a handful making it through and getting on-air roles.Newsrooms are tough places but to be constantly reminded of how little people care about our issues feels wrong.Thankfully, the balance has tipped, and I feel like we see more now than we ever have before.
But it has been exhausting for those of us at the forefront pushing this, whether it's in academia, media, the arts or elsewhere.That's not to say I don't think it's a wonderful message, I do.There are too many people who'll post a black tile and #BLM but when it comes to the work, such as shifting or sharing their power, having Black people encroach on what they consider to be their space, supporting Indigenous stories in all of their forms, they baulk.
For the people trapped in a never-ending loop of incarceration that spans not only their lifetimes but impacts their children and grandchildren.If you're some Byron Bay-flavoured new-age hippie - I can't believe I need to say this - the small amount of knowledge you've garnered from a couple of conversations does not trump voices of the Aboriginal people with lived experience and hundreds of years of intergenerational trauma.
