Chip enthusiast Brandon Gatgens set out to define minimum chips. He soon discovered the humble takeaway is the source of hot debate.
"There are some people suggesting I should get Australian of the Year. That puffs out the chest a little bit," he says.Others take a more negative view.
"There has been a couple of people suggesting that I'm taking it to the small-business owner and I'm unfairly publicising what people are doing, and that I should probably stop the account," he says."I'm close to 30 fish and chip shops now and I'm not looking at stopping any time soon," he says.National Good Food Guide editor Callan Boys says there's a reason the offer might differ between stores.
"They've got to kind of get a little bit more gourmet on things, and you start to offer sushi, you start to offer better quality calamari," he says."Or you might need to compete on price, which means you are importing a lot of seafood from New Zealand, from South Africa.""The good fish and chip shops will put flathead on there, which is great. Australian flathead is one of the best fish and chips you can get," he says.
