A mass shooting at a July 4 parade in a suburb of Chicago was a jarring juxtaposition of violence and Americana—and yet another reminder of just how far apart the political parties are from meaningfully addressing gun reform.

the victims of the Uvalde elementary school shooting, once again shook a community and shocked the national conscience. But the celebration went on: Fireworks, which many of the witnesses initially mistook the gunshots to be at the morning shooting, still lit up the skies over Chicagoland that night.
