There’s much more to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge than just free canapes and champagne. Here’s how to become a member and what’s on offer once you’re inside.

’s Rear Window column recently revealed the prime minister’s son had been given a membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge. It left many asking: Why is there so much hype about getting an entry pass to an airport waiting room? When it comes to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, however, membership goes well beyond the dining and hospitality on offer. What makes it so special is the exclusivity of the club and the special handouts for members once you’ve made it in.

To get through the doors, you have to be the owner of a special black card, which displays your name and membership number. That said, you’re unlikely to actually have to present it. Hosts know who you are, and you will be greeted by name and ushered through. “It is just a zhooshed-up business lounge. The plush part of it is that you walk through these secret doors, and it’s about the way they treat you,” the person said. “It doesn’t smell like a fancy hotel lobby or anything. In fact, it should have its own scent – that’s a real missed opportunity.”You can choose to sit at the bar, the restaurant, the reading area or retreat to a small private room.

But beyond those services and amenities it’s the unwritten acts of generosity that make being a member of this club so coveted. If you’re flying economy, you will be upgraded to business class without having to cough up frequent flyer points, as long as there’s a spare seat up front. In fact, one insider explains that it can become bitterly competitive between senior executives over who gets a membership, and fallouts between colleagues can ensue.
