Mike Durant is the real-life pilot and sole survivor of the tragic Black Hawk Down event. Here's what happened to him after the operation went wrong.
Mike Durant is much more than just a character in Black Hawk Down. As well as being an American war hero, the real-life Durant is a businessman, author, and even a political candidate. Durant is portrayed by actor Ron Eldard in Ridley Scott's 2002 war film Black Hawk Down, which tells the story of two Black Hawk American helicopters getting shot down by Somalian troops. The US Special Forces soldiers involved have to fight to survive after the helicopter crash.

The film includes Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Sam Shepard, Jason Isaacs, Orlando Bloom, and Tom Hardy among other recognizable names. Ron Eldard takes on the role of Michael "Mike" Durant, pilot of one of the Black Hawk helicopters involved in the real-life incident depicted in Black Hawk Down.
Pilot Mike Durant Was Freed 11 Days After He Was Held Captive During The Black Hawk Down Incident Durant, the only American survivor of the crash, was held prisoner by the Somalian troops for 11 days. He was forced to participate in an interrogation video after being shot in the arm by one of the Somalian militants. The video was subsequently released, making international headlines.
Everything Mike Durant Accomplished After Retiring From The Army Mike Durant was determined to prove that he was still his formidable self after the crash. He was given a rod inside his leg after being rescued, which he had taken out in 1995 in order to run the Marine Corps Marathon that year. He defied doctors' expectations and continued to be a pilot in the United States military until 2001. Durant is a highly-decorated war hero and veteran.
Currently 61 years old, Durant retired from the military and moved to Alabama where he gave lectures on military helicopter piloting. He also counseled actor Ron Eldard to prepare for the role in Black Hawk Down. Durant later went on to write two books, In the Company of Heroes and The Night Stalkers, the latter co-written with Steven Hartov. He also became the CEO of an engineering company before deciding to begin his political career in Alabama.
