More than 70% of Republican voters believe the lie that election fraud led to Trump’s loss in the 2020 election. But how did the GOP get here?
Milbank points out that years before Trump’s “Big Lie,” Republican officials promoted other big lies. The George W. Bush White House stoked fears and promoted the Iraq war by promoting baseless claims of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Candidate for Vice President Sarah Palin described so-called Obamacare “,” or boards to determine who was eligible for lifesaving care. For years GOP officials have called the science around climate change a hoax.
For example, the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party brought thousands of activists to the Capitol when former President Barack Obama was in office. It was remarkable at the time, but in hindsight, Milbank says it’s part of a bigger picture with iterations building to the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
