Comment: What I want teens to know about Married at First Sight
If you’re not watching Married at First Sight , good for you; but given that over a million people are it’s best we unpack it. As someone who is deeply dedicated to both Respectful Relationships education for teens as well as a devotee of terrible television, my approach is to use shows like it as a teaching tool. This is what I would tell teens about the show that has exposed some uncomfortable "truths".
is contrived – I’ve seen episodes of the Bold and Beautiful with more believable scripting – but even the most set-up parts of has contained contestants displaying controlling, demeaning and what amounts to abusive behaviour. This season, the main perpetrators so far have been Ines, Sam and Mike. Sadly, these behaviours are familiar to most of us. It is important to tell teens that these are examples of emotional abuse as well as massive red flags for possible escalation. The most obvious example of this is Ines’ treatment of Bronson.
, you’d be forgiven for thinking men should behave like Kujo in a porno if they ever want to get laid. How utterly depressing. There’s so much more to say, but I’ll end with two things. Please stop calling Ines 'a slut'. It’s a gendered and misogynist term and when you use it against her, you use it against all women. One, please stop calling Ines "a slut". It’s a gendered and misogynist term and when you use it against her, you use it against all women. Two, look for the good.
