State of Origin: After arriving at NSW origin camp, Dylan Edwards spoke about a message he received from James Tedesco after taking his place for the Blues.
It may be easy to forget considering how far he has come now, but there was a time when Dylan Edwards wasn’t Penrith’s first-choice fullback .It was 2019 and far from the record-breaking world beaters they are now, the Panthers were languishing near the bottom of the ladder.
And that stunning turnaround in form also coincided with a noticeable change in Edwards, who went from averaging 104 run metres in his first six games of the year to 169 during Penrith’s seven-game winning run. “We weren’t Grand Final winners,” added Beamount. In fact, he said the last premiership Edwards won before his three with Penrith was with the Under-10s.“We didn’t have a lot of numbers and we used to punch above our weight as such.”
Doing his best wasn’t always enough to get the Magpies over the line. Although sometimes they came damn close, especially against Nambucca Heads, who Crow said were “always expected to beat them”.Source: Supplied He was and still is, as Jones put it, “a little scavenger”. Always sniffing out a try-scoring opportunity or any way to make an impact where others may be satisfied with having already done enough. And so he would train, until he would dominate the club’s pre-season testing, to the extent that one summer, when Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Waqa Blake were both at Penrith, everybody in the team tried to beat him.
“He’s finally getting rewarded in terms of accolades and recognition from fans… but he’s been doing it for a long time at Penrith,” added Yeo. “Footy is everything out there pretty much. It’s just the sacrifices his family would have made, just the countless hours of driving. It’s awesome to see it pay off for him and just how hard-working he is, he deserves every bit of what he gets.”
And to know he has been a part of Edwards’ journey to Accor Stadium, even if it is just a small part?“As I said, we didn’t win grand finals or anything, but Dylan’s such a humble man, a family man. “They’ve endured tough times in their career and they’ve basically been able to scale their game back and rebuild it.
