What is this federal holiday, and what is its history? Here's a look:

have added Juneteenth to their list of observed holidays and will be closed on Monday, June 20, because June 19 falls on a Sunday.

The U.S. Postal Service will also be closed on June 20, as will all federal government buildings and government offices.Early celebrations involved church picnics, family gatherings and speeches. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation was brought to enslaved people in Texas — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued it. After Juneteenth became a federal holiday, more corporations got involved in promoting and celebrating it — though not all efforts have been well-received. Dartmouth history professor Matthew Delmont joins LX News to discuss celebrating the holiday respectfully.

Supporters of the holiday have worked to make sure Juneteenth celebrators don’t forget why the day exists.
