Twelve-year-old Heaven Maye was told her father was “away at school” for the entire five years he was in prison in Connecticut, beginning when she was about 2.
The young people interviewed for this story found that schools didn't provide sufficient support, and they felt that because they had incarcerated parents, they were discriminated against. Many authority figures “automatically assume that, This kid is black, and they’re from the ‘hood, so they’re acting out because they’re bad,” parental incarceration activist and filmmaker Akiya McKnight, 28, tells.
As a child, Akiya struggled while both of her her parents were incarcerated. Her dad, Daee Muhammad McKnight, went to jail while her mom was pregnant with her and wasn't released until she was 17. Her mother served a one-year sentence for a nonviolent drug offense when Akiya was 14.
