A majority landowner is nothing new to Lanai — before Larry Ellison, it was David Murdock and James Dole — but Ellison’s ownership feels grander.
, the new wellness retreat, is immaculate, with some of the most beautiful gardens I’ve ever seen. It’s also where Ellison’s collection of eye-catching sculptures pops out of the scenery.
To get to Lanai, it’s possible to fly from Kahului, Maui, or from Oahu, but I prefer traveling the ocean on aout of Maui’s Lahaina Harbor. I like gazing out at the different islands and watching for whales as we cross the Auau Channel. It’s also more economical. Flying to Lanai with Mokulele Airlines can cost about $100 to $200 round trip, depending on where you depart and when you travel, while my ferry is $30 each way.
After being told there are no Jeeps available from two other car rental businesses through a series of text messages, I find a rental through. The owner was very responsive, and the vehicle was clean. The only caveat: no off-roading allowed.
