Walt Disney's next batch of 'Star Wars' movies, after 'The Rise of Skywalker,' must offer compelling new characters without banking on explicit connections to the Skywalker Saga.
We got word last week that Kevin Feige would be developing a newmovie. Whether this singular film was intended to be the start of a larger narrative or a stand-alone flick, it seemed like a natural fit. His MCU has become, if anything, the modern-day equivalent ofin terms of mainstream popularity and pop culture impact.
The emphasis on character, far more so than the overall story arc that eventually became the Infinity Saga, is what kept the franchise going. Even if you weren’t crazy about, you still enjoyed hanging out with Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang or Tom Hiddleston’s Loki . Phase One was rooted in romance, Phase Two was rooted in workplace melodrama and Phase Three was rooted in family strife, but most of the movies were stand-alone and user-friendly. Audiences could miss one and still enjoy the next one.
movies will face this exact obstacle. Yes, Rey, Kylo, Finn and Poe are examples of crafting winning new characters in an existing franchise, but they still had the advantage of a tangential connection to the original trilogy.
