What Mike Miles can do to transform Houston ISD | Opinion
Mike Miles, the former Dallas ISD superintendent, has been laser-focused on student achievement in leading school districts in Colorado Springs and Dallas as well as during his creation and guidance of the Third Future Schools network of charter campuses, writes William McKenzie.The almost larger-than-life task of transforming a large urban school district into classrooms of students learning at the appropriate grade level is one of America’s most pressing domestic challenges.
That is a good move because the West Point graduate has been laser-focused on student achievement in leading school districts in Colorado Springs and Dallas as well as during his creation and guidance of the Third Future Schools network of charter campuses. Houston schools will need that single-mindedness, especially since the Texas Education Agencythe underperforming district after Phillis Wheatley High School failed to meet state academic standards for seven straight years.
But Houston’s challenges go beyond one campus, and they present an object lesson for Dallas and other districts around Texas and the country. Houston ISD’s governance, defined by the school board’s actions as well as how the district uses state policies to improve student performance; innovation, which includes old or new practices that allow students to learn at the appropriate grade level; and ecosystem, which reflects the depth of community support, will determine the eventual result.
