Already a subscriber?Princess Kate is undergoing chemotherapy to mop up any microscopic cancer cells that may have been left behind when she had surgery in January this year.explaining that, at the time of this “major abdominal surgery”, her condition was thought to be non-cancerous.
There are more than 200 types of cancer and the details of the Princess of Wales’ disease have not been disclosed.After recovering from the surgery, in late February, she began having what she described as “preventative chemotherapy”. But there is a difference in intention, says professor Linda Mileshkin, director Medical Oncology at Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. With metastatic cancer, chemotherapy is palliative and aims to make people more comfortable. With early-stage cancer, it aims to increase the chances of cure.
Typical side effects include nausea, vomiting and trouble with bowels. Some of the drugs cause hair loss, some don’t. Some can also suppress the immune system and cause problems with low blood counts and the risk of infection.
