The newly minted LNP government has sensationally suspended the Best Practice Industry Conditions (BPIC) for new major government projects. Here's what they are and what this will mean.
The BPIC policy states union workers can down tools if the temperatures reach 35 degrees Celsius, or 29C with 75 per cent humidity.
The deal was brokered with construction unions and the Queensland government in 2018 for parts of the Townsville Stadium, but it now applies to all major state projects costing more than $100 million.Double time when it rains The LNP has long been a harsh critic of BPIC, labelling it a "sweetheart" deal negotiated between the CFMEU and the former Labor government.Announcing the pause on Thursday morning, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie blamed BPIC for a cut to productivity and cost blow-outs.
"I think it's appropriate that on government jobs, workers aren't competing with each other on wages." "This will lead to a dangerous deregulation of the labour market and more workers dying on construction sites," they said.Construction conditions suspended "House prices were increasing before BPICs was even in planning stages, and are driven by market forces."
