A catastrophic tech failure believed to have been sparked by a software update could potentially be the biggest computer outage in history, experts say. Issues were reported by banks, media outlets, airports, shops and other businesses around the world on Friday, impacting millions. A software update from global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is believed to have sparked the blue screen of death across Microsoft systems.

The company says its Falcon platform was purpose-built to “stop breaches” and detect threats from sophisticated attackers. How did the outage happen? It is understood a dodgy update from CrowdStrike that was rolled out globally was behind users being locked out of their computers. “We’re aware of a widespread issue causing BSOD errors on Windows machines across various sensor versions,” a CrowdStrike spokesperson said.
