With a new acquisition, Tesla is teeing up to deliver the highest levels of driving automation
in production vehicles, supporting neural network optimization may not currently be a big bottleneck for them. This could certainly change, and the DeepScale team can be a key asset as computing requirements increase.
Sabbir Rangwala, a specialist in perception for movement automation at Patience Consulting LLC and former President of Princeton Lightwave, noted that in this move Tesla “… got a great bunch of talent to work on the AI for Tesla’s Driverless Car vision. Gaining people like Forrest who did spectacular work on “efficient AI” at Berkeley and then took it further at DeepScale bodes well that they can integrate into Tesla with their aggressive plans for robotaxis.
If this exit turns out to not be ideal for DeepScale investors this is a far cry from shutting down at zero gain, which happens frequently in the broader startup. AV companies still have significant value and teams that have delved deep into any one part of the business can offer domain specific expertise that isn't easy to come by generically.connected this news to CEO Elon Musk’s vision to enable their vehicles to operate as robotaxis, but I don't see a strong link here.
