Understanding why your child dislikes school can be difficult. Education experts say a starting point is to get kids to be more specific about what they hate.
For Sophie McCrone, getting her son to go to school was once a difficult task. Jackson, who is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder , disliked school as he felt bullied by other students and found it hard to concentrate in class.
The proportion of children disliking school is even higher in high school, with dislike rates peaking in Years 8 and 9. Over half of kids in these two grades dislike school, according to a study by Professor Graham.High school is especially difficult for students because they have to “code-switch” as having more teachers often means needing to meet different sets of rules and expectations, Professor Graham said.
A similar pattern emerged for the least-liked aspects of school. A much higher proportion of dislikers than likers selected schoolwork, teachers and discipline policy as the aspects they disliked most. If a child dislikes school because of bullying, parents can help by communicating with classroom teachers or year advisors who can help address the bullying. For children who struggle to find meaning in going to school, parents can advocate for careers counselling and tutors can provide extra support for children who are struggling academically. Working closely with schools and teachers to adapt teaching styles may also alleviate these struggles, Professor Melvin said.
“A psychometric evaluation will tell you, on a student’s profile, where they might be having trouble and that explains in some ways why a child finds learning difficult.”
