Louisville-native turned Texan Madison Ewing shares what to wear, and what not to wear:"Saturday is the traditional derby, the Run for the Roses," Ewing says."So there's a lot of red, but it's really the day that anything goes.""I truly believe Saturday is the day for hats," Ewing shares."Fascinator and hatinators are more for the other days.
Though popular at weddings across the pond and other social events, fascinators are not permitted for the Ascot's Royal Enclosure in England and Ewing understands why: It's not traditional. However, when it comes to size, she encourages shoppers to be bold."There’s no such thing as a hat that’s too big."Yes, the Kentucky Derby is glamorous, though it's also grueling. Ewing explains that there are no soft surfaces at Churchill Downs. It's all concrete and hours of standing on end. Plus, there's a high chance that a mint julep or two might get spilled on your footwear — so choose wisely."I have a strict don’t-take-your-shoes-off rule," she explains.
