Less than two weeks after its installation off the Gaza coast, a US-built pier helping to deliver aid to Palestinians on the brink of famine broke apart.
The floating pier has now been pulled from the beach and transported north to the southern Israeli city of Ashdod to undergo repairs. To bring people back from the brink of famine, the US Agency for International Development says around 600 trucks of aid need to be delivered each day. They welcomed any help for Palestinians but said the pier was a distraction that took pressure off Israel to open more border crossings, which are far more productive.On Wednesday, local time, national security spokesman John Kirby said: "Nobody said at the outset that it was going to be a panacea for all the humanitarian assistance problems that still exist in Gaza.
