Jasper Lo writes about the Forty-third District in New York’s City Council, where two Chinese American candidates, Susan Zhuang and Ying Tan, are running.

Zhuang, who lives in Bensonhurst, grew up outside Shanghai, and came to the U.S. when she was twenty. She describes her introduction to local politics as almost accidental. A friend asked her to deliver a box of tea to a longtime assemblyman named William Colton; when she got to his office, she was struck by the number of people waiting for his help in dealing with various issues—housing, food stamps, Social Security. Zhuang, who has an M.B.A.

A political consultant working for Tan, George Sarantopoulos, told me he was frustrated by LaBella’s decision. At a recent Republican gathering, Sarantopoulos pleaded with his fellow Party members to reach out “to the Chinese voters, to the Russian voters, to the religious Jewish voters,” adding, “I’m sorry, if we want to be a party of 2023—our Italian friends are moving to Jersey, to North Carolina, they’ve passed on. We have to get out of our comfort zone and reach out to those new voters.
