While there are many advantages to getting where you need to go quickly and without fuss, there are downsides too.
As long-haul flights become ultra long, and passengers celebrate reaching their destination faster, the toll on their minds and bodies is often forgotten.
“While aircraft are getting better and better at flying longer and longer, it’s important to realise there are stresses in the cabin environment and these can interact with existing health problems,” says Gordon Cable, head of aerospace medicine training for the Royal Australian Airforce and a clinical associate professor at the University of Adelaide.
“While aircraft are getting better and better at flying longer and longer, it’s important to realise there are stresses in the cabin environment and these can interact with existing health problems, ” says professor Cable “For those in economy or premium economy, ULH is more of a challenge. They should heed the instructions from the airlines on how to mitigate the stresses,” says Cable. And some aircraft are better configured for ultra-long distances than others. “Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner is engineered to fly with a lower cabin altitude, which is better tolerated, and has higher cabin humidity, so it doesn’t have the same drying effect as other aircraft.
“Other than discomfort, masks don’t affect oxygenation and don’t make a significant difference to blood gas,” he says. “While air filtration on planes is very effective and may certainly protect you from a person at the back of the plane, it won’t protect you from the person sitting next to you.
