A woman who uses an electric wheelchair says she was left feeling like a "lesser person" when she was unable to enter a pre-polling venue to cast her vote in the Voice to Parliament referendum. The pre-polling centre was mislabelled as having "unimpeded" accessMichelle Davidson, who has multiple sclerosis, went to a Wagga Wagga pre-polling station but was unable to get through the front door despite the venue being labelled as having "unimpeded" access.
"We do apologise for anyone who was inconvenienced. Certainly not the experience we want people to have." The AEC has installed a ramp at the polling site, but Ms Davidson said it was a "shoddy attempt at inclusion" because it did not reach the full height of the step. "If one venue has been incorrectly labelled as accessible when it's not, you can guarantee there's other venues throughout the country, I'm hypothesising here, that are also be incorrectly labelled as accessible."Ms Lee said while postal voting was an option for people who can't access polling stations, relying on postal voting excluded people from the experience of voting.
