Votes were set to take place for a new elected Police and Crime Commissioner in 37 areas in England and Wales including Northumbria, Lancashire, Durham, North Wales, Cheshire and Merseyside
Dozens of Police and Crime Commissioners are to be elected across England and Wales following elections on Thursday.
The role of a PCC is to make sure the police force in the area is efficient and effective and they hold the chief constable to account for the delivery of the police and crime plan. They are responsible for the appointment, and if necessary, the suspension and dismissal of a Chief Constable.READ MORE: All the candidates standing in Greater Manchester local elections 2024
A number of PPCs have the added responsibility of overseeing fire and rescue services in those areas. Areas where there is a PFCC include Cumbria, Essex, Northamptonshire, North Yorkshire and Staffordshire.
