When the Green Wattle Creek fire burning south-west of Sydney came close enough to his home to singe the front fence, Oakdale man Pete Turner's response was to finally relax.as he took a brief break from assisting Rural Fire Service tree crews remove the massive blackened gums beyond his fence line.Credit:Living in the path of the growing blaze, he said he had been tormented by whether to go to work or stay to protect his property.

Residents were allowed through roadblocks to evacuate livestock, clear out gutters and pump dams as smoke billowed through the air and ash fell. Preparations were also being taken by officials at the Currowan Fire, close to the township of Bawley Point, north of Batemans Bay.
