That shock soon spread across South Montgomery County, where I grew up and where Blanks was our Michael Jordan starting in the mid-1980s and carrying through the early 1990s. There was no bigger sports name to idolizing youth and adoring adults in the area than Lance Blanks — we had never seen anything like level of play.

“Lance was a folk hero in our area,” said The Woodlands businessman Micky McDougald, a former star guard at Oak Ridge High in the late 1980s and later briefly a teammate of Blanks at UT. “All of us wanted to be Lance Blanks — a 6-foot-4 guard who could do it all.” He’d played his first two years of high school ball at Madison, an iconic squad at that time in its own right behind star guard Sean Gay, one that wound up winning the 1985 Class 5A state title over Conroe and Jacques.
