Around 12,000 members of the train drivers’ union Aslef took part in a mass walkout over the weekend, causing major disruption to those attending sporting and music events AlannahFrancis1 explains if unions will cease walkouts and how the ballots work ⬇️

Mr Lynch said: “At the moment we’ve got a mandate for another five-and-a-half-months going forward. If we need to take more strike action, that’s what we’ll do if our members want to support it. That option is there for us but there’s also an option to negotiate a settlement, which will be far more preferable.”

The Government and the Rail Delivery Group, which represents train operators, are both standing firm on their response to the unions, which suggests the dispute and the disruption could continue for some time.said the strikes have been co-ordinated by union leaders to disrupt passengers who have looked forward to events all year and were also “targeting their own members’ pockets by forcing them to miss out on pay every time they strike”.

The DfT spokesperson added: “The Government has facilitated a fair and reasonable pay offer, now union leaders must do the right thing and put this to their members.”It is possible that further strikes could take place this month. Unions are required to give 14 days’ notice of any further strike action, which means more walkouts could take place from the latter part of June onwards.Last month, the RMT announced the results of a re-ballot of members working for 14 train operating companies.Aslef, which balloted its members in February, also has a mandate to continue strike action.

Ballots must pass the 50 per cent participation threshold imposed by Government legislation for votes in favour of walkouts to comply with the law.Unions involved in disputes that employ industrial action are required to re-ballot their members every six months in order for strikes and other forms of action to continue legally.
