When will we know who won the L.A. mayoral race — and why is it taking so long?

How come the count in the race for mayor between Rep. Karen Bass and Rick Caruso is taking so long? And how does the process work? We've got answers:

L.A. County generally releases new vote totals only twice a week. That allows for more substantial updates, rather than incremental ones ‘where things are bouncing back and forth,’ the county’s top voting official said.That’s also unknown. The registrar doesn’t separate out ballots by city until they are counted, so all they know for sure is how many ballots are uncounted countywide.

According to Los Angeles County registrar-recorder spokesperson Mike Sanchez, the office expects to release its next ballot count this afternoon. That’s likely include between 100,000 and 150,000 ballots — but, again, that’s countywide. How many will be in the city of Los Angeles is not known.
