Australian digital media start-ups have expressed doubts about Elon Musk’s plans to bring unrestrained free speech to the closely watched platform.
CEO of social media company HeyLink, Olga Oleinikova, says there’s no “easy recipe” for free speech online.Dr Olga Oleinikova, the co-founder of Sydney-based HeyLink, a digital platform used by influencers and businesses on social media to organise links and track site visits, said “there’s no good recipe” for easily balancing individuals’ rights to free speech with platforms’ responsibilities to governments and communities.
“Elon Musk is saying he wants to create more freedom of speech. It’s a great idea, right? Hopefully he can achieve that. But where is the line? Does it end with the law? Where [can] censorship step in?” “It becomes challenging when you’re growing,” Oleinikova said. “Thirty million people [the number of monthly visitors through the platform] can report something every month. It’s a big volume.”HeyLink created a list of content that would lead to an immediate banning of a user’s account, which includes the sale of endangered or threatened species, the promotion of hatred or violence, and the sharing of “manipulated media related to politics, social issues or matters of public concern.
“Brand safety is obviously the biggest thing for all advertisers,” he said. “They’ll be hesitant to spend with Twitter if content isn’t moderated.”
