It’s been nearly two years since the famous white whale was spotted, with concerns something might have happened to the famous albino.

Experts say there is still hope Migaloo, the world-famous white humpback whale, is still swimming through waters off Australia, despite no official sightings for nearly two years. With the annual humpback whale migration under way in 2022, there are concerns the albino whale might have met an untimely end, but experts urged whale watchers not to lose hope.

“But far more likely is that we just haven’t seen him – that sounds unlikely with so many people looking for him, but it’s a big ocean out there.”Dr Wally Franklin, a marine scientist with Southern Cross University who has studied Migaloo since the early 1990s, said he would not expect to see the whale in Australian waters until about July, so he was not worried yet.

Drone footage captured by a teenager on holiday at Fingal Head in northern NSW in April raised excitement that it might show Migaloo, with the vision showing a white humpback frolicking in the water. But Pirotta said she and other experts, including Franklin, agreed the whale was not Migaloo because it had different markings.
