Where to watch NASCAR this weekend
With three races left in the regular season and 15 winners, the time to fight for points is over. Right now, just one of Ryan Blaney or Martin Truex Jr. is set to make the postseason on points, despite both sitting in the top four of the series standings. With the guaranteed spot for the championship leader 120 points out of their grasp, any other winner inside the top 30 would instantly eliminate both Blaney and Truex from championship contention.
In other words, while each could still make the playoffs without one, both teams know that they realistically need a race win. That makes the next race urgent. While both Blaney and Truex are capable of winning in the upcoming races on a road course and a pack racing track, Richmond is the last predictable stop on the schedule until the playoffs actually start. It is a must-win for two of the season's four best drivers, an opportunity they cannot waste and a race they cannot be happy with unless they win.
The same goes for Bubba Wallace, who has been on a tear over the past month. Wallace has four top tens in his last four races, including three top fives and a runner-up finish just last week. Without a win, none of that does him any good. While Watkins Glen may not be his strength, Wallace will be the hot hand to watch at both Richmond and Daytona. Last time the series visited the latter, he missed his first Daytona 500 win by half a car-length.
