Two dueling docs, one from FX and Hulu, the other from Netflix, tackle Britney Spears’s conservatorship in vastly different ways. One feels noticeably less contrived.
“boring” and “a waste of everyone’s time,” that’s not a fair assessment. By interviewing dubious figures from Britney’s past like Ghalib and Lutfi, Carr chooses not to pander to the legion of Britney Spears’s fans who, perhaps rightfully, believe both of these men to have been terrible influences on her, instead allowing each man to present their side of the story.
These head-scratching moments, coupled with the frank and upsetting footage from Britney’s past—particularly footage of the paparazzi swarming around an ambulance with Britney inside—will leave you feeling almost nauseous for a woman who’s devoted the better part of her life to entertaining the masses without feeling as though you’ve necessarily learned anything new, or at the very least, anything you can trust.
