Tim Nairne was meant to spend Christmas in Queensland with family. Instead, he will be stuck in a room in his Sydney apartment watching his daughter open her presents over a video call after testing positive for COVID-19.

"We will FaceTime [Tim] in the morning so he can see Leila and I think I have still got a couple of little gifts in the backlog for her so I will get him to pop those out and we'll call him and she can open them," she said.

The uptick in cases comes as families and friends celebrate after a difficult year, which in parts of NSW included 107 days in lockdown due to the Delta outbreak.
