ANALYSIS: While the US media slammed Trump for the Woodward tapes, the President spoke straight to the voters that matter
As the news about Donald Trump's deliberate downplaying of the coronavirus was blowing up across America this week, a troubling question was raised.
"The biggest problem I had, which is always a problem with Trump, is I didn't know if it was true," theAmerica's top infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, went some way in countering Woodward's account in an interview with Fox News.It would have been more effective as a defence if Trump wasn't on tape admitting to distorting the message, by "playing it down" to avoid panic.
It's a great technique for a salesman trying to wrong-foot a potential client when they're trying to make a deal. But it's likely to play well among voters who don't want black sludge washing up on their favourite beaches. Second, the President announced a new slate of 20 potential nominees for America's highest judicial post, the Supreme Court.
He's signalling to his base that a wholesale ban on abortion, by overturning the landmark Roe v Wade case, is within their reach.
