It might even look as if the Government had finally got its act together to solve a problem
Sunak, to his credit, has been forthright on the need to “get the Protocol sorted”, as he told backbenchers in an early briefing. That has put him on a collision course with many on the Right of the party who will suspect any deal with Brussels as capitulation.
The centrepiece means the EU accepting that goods going to Northern Ireland from the mainland will be treated differently from those going into single market of Ireland. And while it leaves rather vague what happens if goods which may subsequently cross the internal Irish border, the evolving view is that, barring suspicions of animal cruelty, food safety or security fears, this is a matter better left fudged in order to ease bottlenecks.
What might move the dial this time? The old joke about the slogan of the DUP being the word “no” has a grain of truth to it. However, its leadership is not immune to pressure in the province over the downsides of trade complexities persisting in the face of a recession and economic competition from the Republic. Crucially, their recent tone has been one of testing any proposed remedy, rather than automatically declining it. That is a shift in emphasis.
