A Texas trooper's account of young migrants caught and sliced by razor wire installed as part of Gov. Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star has caused an uproar.
“It’s not about security, it’s about cruelty.
“From a pregnant mother having a miscarriage while trapped in barbed wire to drownings of children and outright refusals to provide life-saving water in extreme Texas heat, the treatment of our fellow humans on the Texas-Mexico border by DPS is unconscionable and unacceptable,” said state Rep. Victoria Neave, D-Dallas, chair of the caucus.
Gutierrez, whose district includes Uvalde, where a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers on May 24, 2022, at Robb Elementary School, likened the treatment of migrants at the border to that mass shooting, when police and troopers waited until it was too late to rush the gunman and save hostages.“They left defenseless kids to die in Uvalde. It’s not hard to believe they’d send defenseless children at the border to their death,” he said.
