After doubting the Palestinian death toll, President Joe Biden was visited by a Palestinian delegation. He then added Islamophobia to a strategy already addressing antisemitism and other forms of hate.

In New York, a 21-year-old Cornell University student was this week charged for allegedly making death threats claiming he wanted to rape Jewish women, behead Jewish babies and shoot up a Kosher dining hall at the campus.

Towson University president Mark Ginsberg, US Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and policy adviser Neera Tanden meet with students to discuss antisemitism on college campuses in Towson, Maryland, on Thursday.“We assess that the actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration, the likes of which we haven’t seen since ISIS launched its-so called caliphate several years ago,” Wray told a Senate hearing this week, referring to the Islamic State terror group.

Jewish day schools have cancelled classes. Security has been beefed up at synagogues. And colleges such as Cornell, Harvard and New York University have become flash points of anger and unrest. Biden has been forced to walk a careful line on the domestic front too, where pro-Palestinian protests have erupted across the country and many Palestinian Americans have become increasingly frustrated by the rush to support Israel.

“He acknowledged that. He received it. He also gave us a form of apology,” Nashashibi told NPR this week. But the White House still faced fire from both sides when it was announced: pro-Israel supporters pointed out that the Jewish community was bearing the brunt of disproportionate attacks ; while pro-Palestinians argued that a national strategy tackling Islamophobia lacked credibility given the administration’s financial backing of Israel’s military.
