The White House is reportedly moving a National Security Council spokeswoman to work as a communications aide for the office of the chief of staff.
Saloni Sharma, who worked as a deputy spokeswoman for the NSC, is now serving as a senior adviser for communications to the office of the chief of staff and as special assistant to the president, CNN reported.“President Biden is delivering on his promise to make government work for the American people. Saloni will be a key part of the team in our efforts to communicate how we are getting the job done,” chief of staff Jeff Zients said.
In her new capacity, Sharma joins the president's senior leadership team alongside counselor Steve Ricchetti; deputy chiefs of staff Jen O’Malley Dillon, Bruce Reed, and Natalie Quillian; and advisers Mike Donilon and Anita Dunn. Her focus is on interacting with reporters daily, communications, and strategic planning, according to the White House. The position was previously held by Remi Yamamoto, who served during former chief of staff Ron Klain's tenure. It is a position unique to the Biden administration.
Zients, who took the reins as chief of staff last month, succeeding Klain, has shuffled staff around in recent weeks as he settles into his new role. Last month, for instance, Quillian, who worked as deputy coordinator of the COVID-19 response, was bumped up to his deputy chief of staff. Zients previously spearheaded the COVID-19 task force.Previously, Sharma worked for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen.
“Saloni Sharma is a hidden national treasure. She is smart, principled, and fearless,” national security adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN. “She loves this country, and she fights for it. She loves this president, and she fights for him. And we love Saloni.”
