Declassified intelligence has revealed how Vladimir Putin’s forces are faring in a hotly contested battle in eastern Ukraine.

The declassified intel believes more than 20,000 Russian troops have died since December, with half of the men from the private Wagner mercenary group.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby declared the colossal losses and lack of territory gain in recent months a “failure” by Putin’s forces. "Russia's attempt at an offensive in the Donbas largely through Bakhmut has failed," Mr Kirby told reporters. "We estimate that Russia has suffered more than 100,000 casualties, including over 20,000 killed in action,” he said, citing numbers that have not been independently verified.

Russia launched its second wave of missile strikes in two days on Monday, wounding at least 24 people in the eastern city of Pavlohrad.
