The White House appeared happy to let House Republicans' drama unfold as Rep. Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) speakership hopes seem to dim on Capitol Hill.
"We're certainly not going to insert ourselves in what's happening on the other side of Pennsylvania Avenue," press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday, referring to Congress.Jean-Pierre took to her briefing podium as McCarthy fell short on a second leadership ballot, the first time a candidate for speaker has not been elected after one round of voting in more than 100 years. The House cannot properly convene until a speaker has been chosen.
Jean-Pierre was pressed about President Joe Biden's priorities for 2023 now that Republicans control the House. Democrats still control the Senate. The press secretary declined"to get into specifics" on pieces of legislation or policies but insisted Biden"is very optimistic on what lies ahead." "He's willing to work with Republicans who are willing to continue to deliver for the American people," she said.
Instead, Jean-Pierre underscored Biden's bipartisan infrastructure event Wednesday with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Covington, Kentucky."It really speaks to the results of the midterm election and what the American people said very loudly and clearly," she said."They want us to work together. They want us to work toward a common purpose that will work for them.
