White Island volcano survivor Stephanie Browitt, 26, has removed her compression face mask for the first time since the tragedy which killed 22 people including her dad and younger sister.

The 26-year-old was touring White Island, also known as Whakaari, with her sister Krystal and father Paul when it exploded off the coast of New Zealand on December 9, 2019.

And on Sunday night she shared her moment of triumph with 60 Minutes, by removing her face mask and revealing her face. The removal of the face mask was the last of several bandages the 26-year-old has been wrapped up in to help her skin heal from the life-threatening burns.“It’s emotional and scary. It’s actually quite daunting as much as it is exciting.”

“As much as this is exciting, it’s been a long, hard journey to get here, and I definitely think I’m tougher than I ever thought I would be,” she said. “I do wish my dad and sister were still alive and still with me and that they could be here for this moment,” she said.
