"The variants of interest are just outcompeted by the variants of concern. They're just not taking hold," Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's COVID-19 technical lead, said on Tuesday. Iota has proven to be the most prevalent of the three variants, but still only reached a peak of 3 percent of all sequences. Kappa peaked at 1 percent and Eta never broke the 1 percent mark.
