Jack Smith will oversee as a special counsel the ongoing Justice Department probes related to former President Donald Trump, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday.Until today’s appointment, Smith was the chief prosecutor for the special court in The Hague charged with investigating and adjudicating war crimes in Kosovo, according to the Justice Department. He had served in that position since 2018.
Speaking to reporters at the Justice Department, Garland outlined Smith’s resume, which also includes: • Serving as the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee starting in 2015, and later becoming acting U.S. attorney.“Based on recent developments, including the former president’s announcement that he’s a candidate for president in the next election, I have concluded that it’s in the public interest to appoint a special counsel,” Garland said Friday.
