75-year-old Salman Rushdie is an acclaimed author who has also spent part of his life living in exile as a result of threats against him for some of his work. 9News
has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous.
At least 45 people were killed in riots over the book, including 12 people in Rushdie's hometown of Mumbai. In 1991, a Japanese translator of the book was stabbed to death and an Italian translator survived a knife attack. In 1993, the book's Norwegian publisher was shot three times and survived.Rushdie's own website describes the book this way:
Rushdie dismissed that threat at the time, saying there was "no evidence" of people being interested in the reward., about the fatwa. The title came from the pseudonym Rushdie had used while in hiding., demonstrations took place in Australia where Muslim Australians denounced the book.The group marched to their local mosque in opposition to the publication of book, with large signs saying they were in support of Komeini's ruling against Rushdie.
After Dymocks pulled the book off their shelves due to threats, the Australian Society of Authors held a pro-Salman Rushdie demonstration outside one of their stores
