The first Land Rovers were built by the Rover Company at the direction of Maurice Wilks. These were largely based on the, which continued to cruise around a world starting to rebuild. Retroactively called called the Series I, these first Land Rovers were rough-and-tumble machines even in comparison to other late-1940s vehicles, but the early models included an unusual freewheeling four-wheel drive system.
Under Tata ownership, Land Rover has sold more vehicles than ever before. Owned and controlled by the Indian firm but still British-designed, Tata brought costs down while capitalizing on the most profitable high-end Range Rover models. More efficient new engines and higher-end technology finally brought Land Rover up to date, along with new Range Rover models including the Sport, Evoque, and Velar. Tata still owns Land Rover, but grouped the company with Jaguar in 2012.
